July 2005

Thank you to all the members who brought food for our potluck meal at our June 16th meeting.

Our first meeting of the month will be on Thursday, July 7th at our meeting place. This night we will be installing our new officers for 2005-06.  Sharon Gedeon at the H.L. Legion will cater the meal.  The cost of the meal will be $10 per person.  Spouses and “significant others” are also invited.   PDG Kevin Schultz will perform the installation.  All new officers are strongly encouraged to attend.

Our second meeting will be take place on Thursday, July 21st also at our meeting place.  There
will be a Board of Directors meeting at 6:30 P.M.  No one has volunteered to cook at this meeting.  If interested, please let Lion Steve know.  Without a meal, the business meeting will be at 7:00 P.M.

At our May 19th meeting, our club decided to raise our membership dues from $40 to $50 effective immediately.  These fees are to be paid by no later than July 1st.  You can pay them by either by attending one of our two meetings in June or you can mail them to: Howard Lake Lions; P.O. Box 13; Howard Lake, Minnesota 55349.

The recipients of our Lion’s club scholarships that were presented at the HLWW Graduation on May 29th are:  Zach Arvidson, Jacklin Hubbell, and Brianne Mahlstedt.

The Cokato and Howard Lake Lions will be holding a benefit auction at 4:00 P.M. for Chris Barth on Saturday, July 23rd.  The consignment auction will take place at Block 18 in Howard Lake.  Chris was very seriously injured in an accident at his home back in March.  Besides the auction, there will be entertainment and a meal.  Items that can sell and not sell are included in this newsletter plus a consignment auction contract.  Lions Mike Main, Debbie McALpine, and Catherine Stenberg are co-chairing the H.L. side of this event.

The Minnesota Twins and the Lions of MD5M are teaming up to bring you Lions Day with the Twins on Sunday August 21st at 1:10 P.M.  The Twins will be playing the Seattle Mariners that day.  Tickets for the game can be purchased at a reduce rate with two dollars from each ticket going to the Minnesota Eye Bank.  An order form is included with this newsletter.

Our Lions club will be holding our 4th Annual 4-Player Scramble Golf Tournament on Saturday, July 16th at The Greens in Howard Lake.  It will start at 8:00 A.M. with a shotgun start. In case of rain, it will be held on July 23rd.

As in the past three years, there will be a pork chop dinner following the tournament.
There are two committees this year for the tournament.  The first one will be the tournament committee.  The members of this committee are Lions Steve Weber (chairperson), Denny Massey, and Catherine Stenberg.  The second one will be the Food Committee.  Members on this committee are Lions Tom Fiecke, Harvey Krohn, and Jeremy Kadlec.  Both of these committees will have a short meeting following our next business meeting on June 2nd.

Starting with this year’s tournament, the proceeds will go towards a charity, a cause, or a benefit. This year’s proceeds will go towards the family of Tim Jensen.  Tim, a sophomore at HLWW High School, was critically injured in a car accident on March 31st.  He is slowly improving every day now but has a long road of recovery ahead of him.  With that in mind, the medical expenses that he and his family will incur will be huge.  The proceeds will go toward his medical expenses.

In order to raise money for the family, there are some new twists to the tournament.  First of all the entry fee has been raised to $50 per player or $200 per team.  Second, various businesses and organizations in the area will sponsor each hole at The Greens.  The cost for sponsoring a hole is $50.00.  So far, twenty-five businesses and organizations have donated.  Third, there will be a free-will offering at various locations on the course. Finally, there will be a silent auction before, during, and following the tournament.

Speaking of silent auction, if you or know of someone that have items that they would like to be donated towards the silent auction, please let Lion Steve know ASAP.

There also will be contests on each hole this year, which will include a second hole-in-one contest on hole #3.  There will be various donated prizes on each of the other seven holes.

Flyers for the tournament are now being done by the staff at the Herald-Journal (These are free of charge!).  They should be ready to distribute this week.  If interested in passing these out to various businesses in the area, please contact Lion Steve Weber at 543-3567 (H) or 3471 (W).  The signs that will show the sponsors are also being done by the Herald-Journal free of charge.

We are going to need lots of help from the membership to make this tournament go this year.

Our club is still taking orders for our new HL Lions club shirts.  The shirts are red with white lettering.  This time, the shirts are also available in women’s style along with the men’s.  The cost of the shirts are as follows: S –XL--$16; 2XL--$18; 3XL--$21.  If you are interested in ordering one, please put your name and size on a slip of paper in an envelope along with a check for the cost of shirt to: Lion Steve Weber; P.O. Box 22; Howard Lake, MN 55349.  Please make your check payable to C & C Embroidery.

Happy birthday to the following Howard Lake Lion members who will be celebrating a birthday
in July: Brian McIntosh (1); Cathy Rufer (16); Welton Zander (20); and Darren McAlpine (24).
